Walk into any pharmacy or scroll through social media and you will find dozens of products promising a dazzling white smile: whitening strips, LED kits, charcoal toothpastes, oil pulling, baking soda \u2014 the list goes on.<\/p>\n<p>As dental professionals, we see the results of these products every day. Some are genuinely helpful. Many are ineffective. A few can actually cause harm. Here is our honest, unsponsored guide to what actually works.<\/p>\n<h2>First: What Makes Teeth Yellow or Discoloured?<\/h2>\n<p>Understanding the cause of discolouration is the key to choosing the right treatment, because not all discolouration can be whitened.<\/p>\n<p>Extrinsic staining affects the outer surface of the tooth and is caused by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coffee, tea, red wine, and cola<\/li>\n<li>Tobacco use (smoking or chewing)<\/li>\n<li>Certain foods like berries, beetroot, and curry<\/li>\n<li>Poor oral hygiene allowing plaque and tartar to build up<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Intrinsic discolouration affects the inner structure of the tooth and is caused by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Certain antibiotics taken during childhood (particularly tetracycline)<\/li>\n<li>Excessive fluoride exposure in childhood (fluorosis)<\/li>\n<li>Ageing \u2014 as enamel thins over time, the naturally yellower dentin beneath shows through<\/li>\n<li>Trauma to the tooth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whitening treatments work well on extrinsic staining. Intrinsic discolouration is much harder to treat with bleaching alone, and in those cases, veneers or bonding may produce better results.<\/p>\n<h2>What Doesn&#8217;t Work<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Charcoal toothpaste \u2014 there is no credible evidence it whitens teeth, and the abrasiveness can wear away enamel over time. We do not recommend it.<\/li>\n<li>Oil pulling \u2014 an ancient practice with no scientific evidence of whitening effect.<\/li>\n<li>Baking soda \u2014 mildly abrasive, may remove some surface staining, but not a meaningful whitening treatment.<\/li>\n<li>Blue LED light kits from the internet \u2014 the lights alone do not whiten teeth. They only activate certain professional bleaching gels; without the correct concentration of whitening agent, the light does nothing.<\/li>\n<li>Whitening toothpastes \u2014 can help maintain results and remove mild surface staining, but cannot change the underlying shade of your teeth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What Does Work<\/h2>\n<p>Professional teeth whitening using hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gels is the only approach with strong clinical evidence behind it. There are two main formats:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In-office whitening (chair-side) \u2014 a high-concentration gel is applied by a dental professional, often with a light to accelerate activation. Results are visible immediately, typically lightening teeth by several shades in a single appointment.<\/li>\n<li>Take-home trays \u2014 custom-fitted trays made from impressions of your teeth, worn with a lower-concentration professional gel for 1\u20132 hours a day over 1\u20132 weeks. Results are equally impressive but achieved more gradually.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Over-the-counter strips from reputable brands (like Crest Whitestrips) do contain real whitening agents and can produce modest results \u2014 but the concentration is limited by regulation, and the one-size-fits-all tray means uneven contact with teeth.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Is Teeth Whitening Safe?<\/h2>\n<p>Professional whitening, performed or supervised by a dentist, is safe and well-studied. The most common side effect is temporary tooth sensitivity, which typically resolves within a few days of completing treatment.<\/p>\n<p>The risks increase with unregulated products. High-concentration gels sold online or applied by non-dental professionals (in beauty salons or kiosks) can cause chemical burns to gum tissue and lasting enamel damage. In Hungary, as across the EU, only registered dental professionals are legally permitted to apply whitening products above a certain concentration.<\/p>\n<h2>Realistic Expectations<\/h2>\n<p>Professional whitening will not make your teeth a shade found in nature. But it can make a visible, natural-looking improvement \u2014 removing years of staining and restoring a brighter, healthier appearance.<\/p>\n<p>Results last 12\u201324 months on average, depending on your diet and habits.
