A nicer smile, easier breathing, a healthier bite<\/h3>\n

A narrow upper jaw affects not only the aesthetics of the smile, but also the bite, breathing and even the quality of sleep. Fortunately, there is now an effective, safe and well-established solution: the Hyrax appliance<\/strong>, which performs expansion of the palate or upper jaw<\/strong> \u2013 whether in childhood or in adulthood.<\/p>\n

Why might palatal expansion be needed?<\/h3>\n

In many children and adults the upper jaw is narrower than the lower one. This can cause, for example:<\/p>\n

  • crossbite<\/strong>, when the upper teeth bite inside the lower ones,<\/li>\n
  • tooth crowding<\/strong>, because there is not enough room for the teeth,<\/li>\n
  • mouth breathing<\/strong>, because the nasal passages are narrower too,<\/li>\n
  • or simply a narrow, closed smile<\/strong> that is also reflected in the facial profile.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    If the upper jaw is narrow, it is not just an aesthetic issue: it can affect breathing, chewing and even the development of the face.<\/p>\n

    Childhood palatal expansion \u2013 the role of the Hyrax appliance<\/h3>\n

    In childhood the bones are still flexible, and between the two halves of the palate there is a growth suture (the midpalatal suture), which responds well to expansion up to about 15 years of age.
    This is when the Hyrax appliance<\/strong> can be used; the orthodontic specialist fixes it to the upper teeth. With the small screw in the middle, we expand the palate very gently each day<\/strong>. The procedure can be carried out at home, and the expansion itself takes about 2 to 3 weeks.<\/p>\n
