With such a wide range of options, it is no longer easy to find your way through the sea of orthodontic appliance types. In this article, we take a detailed look at the various appliances. Our aim is to help those interested find the solution best suited to their needs and lifestyle, from both an aesthetic and a functional point of view.<\/p>\n

An overview of the types of braces<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Did you know that nearly 30% of children and adults need orthodontic treatment for a more beautiful smile and functional improvement? Choosing the right type of braces is crucial for achieving the best possible result. The specialists at Foxxi take several factors into account to help patients find the most advantageous solution. Braces can generally be grouped according to the treatment method, their material, and their visibility. Thanks to their comfort and discretion, invisible, removable clear aligner solutions (e.g. Invisalign<\/a>)<\/strong> are becoming increasingly popular, and with them the same excellent results can be achieved as with traditional appliances. With patient comfort and aesthetics in mind, however, Foxxi’s specialists \u2013 who have ten years of international experience \u2013 recommend self-ligating metal and ceramic appliances, as well as invisible, removable clear aligners, rather than traditional ones. But let’s take a slightly more detailed look at what the different types of braces can do!<\/p>\n

Self-ligating metal braces: a wealth of advantages<\/strong><\/h2>\n

These braces are very similar to the traditional appliances everyone is familiar with, but unlike those, self-ligating brackets have a built-in clip mechanism. This holds the archwire in place, so there is no need for traditional elastic ligatures (ties). As a result, there is less friction between the brackets and the archwire, so the force acting on the teeth is much more even. Moreover, the teeth move into place more naturally and with less pain, which is also a huge advantage. Not to mention that with self-ligating braces, visits to the practice can be less frequent and shorter, since without elastic ligatures there is no need to regularly replace the elastic rings. In addition, self-ligating appliances are more aesthetic (the brackets are smaller) and easier to clean than traditional ones, yet they are just as strong and durable, making them excellent for effectively treating a wide variety of orthodontic problems.<\/p>\n

Self-ligating ceramic braces: discreet strength<\/strong><\/h2>\n

These appliances combine the advantages of self-ligating systems with the discreet appearance of ceramic brackets \u2013 they blend almost seamlessly into the teeth. They also pass the durability test with flying colors: in addition to moving the teeth into place just as reliably as metal ones, they are equally resistant to stains and discoloration, so they remain aesthetically attractive for a long time. In the interest of fairness, we note that they are somewhat more expensive than metal appliances, but many people still choose them because of their aesthetic advantages.<\/p>\n

Invisible braces: comfort, aesthetics, efficiency <\/strong><\/h2>\n

Invisalign (in the use of which Foxxi is a gold-level partner) and similar invisible, removable clear aligners are made of translucent plastic, custom-shaped to individual measurements. The principle of operation is that each new aligner has a slightly different shape than the dental arch, thereby moving the teeth. These aligners fit comfortably over the teeth and are almost invisible, providing an aesthetic solution. They are easy to wear, and since they can be removed for eating and brushing, both the teeth and the appliance are easy to clean. What is worth knowing is that removable clear aligners can be more expensive than other types, and in the case of certain more complex dental problems they are not always effective, or treatment with them may take longer. In many cases, however, they offer a great solution. They work extremely well for mild or moderate crowding, a slight overbite, crossbite, a milder open bite, and closing small gaps or spaces between the teeth \u2013 and when everyone sees the result, they will give you an admiring wink. It is important to note, however, that using Invisalign also requires a little discipline, because once you take it out, you have to put it back in, otherwise it will not work.<\/p>\n

Traditional removable braces: for childhood jaw discrepancies and minor corrections<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This includes the night-time orthodontic appliance familiar to many. We use these types primarily with children, and their purpose is to correct minor discrepancies and to guide bone growth. For example, they can place a child’s jaw in the correct position so that the permanent teeth can later erupt into a better bite position. In addition, they are also a useful tool for retention, that is, maintaining the results achieved. They can also be of good service in partial treatments that do not require a fixed system, where only a few teeth need to be aligned.<\/p>\n

Traditional fixed braces: there is now a more modern solution <\/strong><\/h2>\n

These are reliable appliances in which small elastic rings (ligatures) secure the metal archwire to the brackets of the braces. Their disadvantage is that the elastics can become discolored, and that more plaque and food debris can accumulate in the areas around the elastic ligatures, making it harder to keep the teeth clean. Not to mention that the elastic rings need to be replaced regularly, so our visits to the dentist may also be more frequent. Make no mistake \u2013 this type of braces is also an effective, well-established tool, but our experience shows that patients are most grateful when we achieve the perfect end result as quickly as possible, without unnecessary detours.<\/p>\n

Lingual braces – in the shadow of clear aligners<\/strong><\/h2>\n

We mention this type only for the sake of completeness, but we do not use it in our practice. Lingual braces, placed on the inner surface of the teeth, do have advantages, such as invisibility, but on one hand they have been superseded by clear aligners, and on the other hand fewer people choose this solution due to the higher costs, the discomfort, the longer treatment time, and the difficulties of cleaning.<\/p>\n

The discomfort stems from the fact that, because of their placement on the tongue side, the brackets can irritate the tongue. Since these “pads” are located at the back, the appliance and the teeth are harder to clean, which can increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. In addition, because of the individually customized brackets and archwires, the work required during treatment is more time-consuming, so not only can the length of treatment be extended, but the cost can also be higher.<\/p>\n

Summary – how to choose <\/strong>among the types of braces<\/strong>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

To achieve a beautiful smile and functional improvement, choosing the right type of braces is crucial, and for this it is important to take into account the patient’s dental problem, individual needs, and lifestyle.<\/p>\n

With self-ligating metal braces, the force acting on the teeth is much more even, and they also require less frequent visits to the practice than traditional elastic braces. The more aesthetic self-ligating ceramic appliances are just as effective as metal ones, but more expensive. The increasingly popular invisible, removable clear aligners (e.g. Invisalign, Smilezor) provide a discreet and, in most cases, very effective solution. When correcting more serious problems, however, treatment with them may take longer. Removable night-time braces are used mainly with children to correct jaw discrepancies and for minor corrections, as well as for retention to maintain the result of the treatment after almost all orthodontic treatments.<\/p>\n
