A lot of misconceptions circulate online about nighttime orthodontic appliances. We would like to dispel a few of these urban legends and reassure adults and children alike: in many cases, a nighttime orthodontic appliance is an excellent choice. In this article we explain what is worth knowing about nighttime orthodontic appliances for adults and children<\/b>, how to clean them and, above all, who should wear them and how, so that we can achieve the perfect result as soon as possible. Of course, there are many other orthodontic alternatives, but if you choose a good orthodontic specialist, they will recommend the solution that suits you best anyway.<\/p>\n

Nighttime braces in adulthood<\/h2>\n

Nighttime orthodontic appliances, just like their day-and-night counterparts, move your teeth slowly and gradually into the desired position, or hold them in place to maintain the result.<\/p>\n

Their advantage is that, with the right discipline, your smile stays beautiful for a long time even after the orthodontic treatment, so there is no need to worry about your teeth shifting apart again.<\/p>\n

People often come to us wishing the problem had been addressed back in childhood, but in most cases there is fortunately still an opportunity to resolve these issues in adulthood as well. Naturally, if a nighttime orthodontic appliance turns out to be the ideal solution for you, your perseverance and discipline will be essential, because the more often you forget to put in your nighttime appliance at night, the less effective the treatment will be.<\/p>\n

Nighttime braces for children<\/span><\/h2>\n

Most children lead an active life. They go to school, play sports and have plenty of fun with their friends. To let them do all of this carefree and unrestricted, a nighttime orthodontic appliance can be a great choice for them.<\/p>\n

Since children are sometimes reluctant to agree to wearing a fixed appliance all the time, the nighttime version can reduce the potential inconveniences that come with treatment. For example, it does not interfere with eating habits, and since it is advisable to wear it for 10\u201312 hours a day, this duration can even be accumulated in several shorter periods during times when wearing it does not bother them.<\/p>\n

Another advantage is that at a young age the teeth can still be moved more easily, so nighttime orthodontics can be an effective method. It is important that the child wears the nighttime appliance long enough to achieve the desired result. With younger children, it is worth having the parents help to determine and stick to the wearing periods, so that the final result is both beautiful and lasting. In every case we apply the method best suited to the individual child. Before starting treatment, a personal consultation is always necessary, because in addition to the child’s teeth, it is important to check the size and position of the jawbones as well.<\/p>\n

The good news is that several solutions are available, both removable and fixed appliances!<\/p>\n

Cleaning the nighttime orthodontic appliance<\/h2>\n

Regular and thorough cleaning of the nighttime orthodontic appliance is essential to extend the appliance’s lifespan and to maintain oral hygiene. Rinse the appliance thoroughly under cold or lukewarm water after every use. Then use a soft toothbrush and a mild, non-foaming toothpaste, or a tablet made specifically for cleaning orthodontic appliances, to remove deposits and bacteria. To avoid vigorous scrubbing, gently clean the inner and outer surfaces of the appliance with circular motions. Never use hot water, as it can deform the appliance. After you have finished cleaning, let the appliance air-dry before placing it in its case. Once a week you can also soak the appliance in an antibacterial solution to kill bacteria.<\/p>\n

How long do you have to wear a nighttime orthodontic appliance?<\/h2>\n

The length of time a nighttime orthodontic appliance is worn depends primarily on the treatment plan and on the patient’s individual dental irregularity. The treatment may last a few months, or even 1 to 1.5 years.<\/p>\n

Once the desired result is achieved, wearing the appliance should not be stopped immediately. This is called the retention phase: after treatment, we hold the teeth in their new position so that they do not return to their previous state. The length of this phase depends on the severity of the problem that was treated.<\/p>\n

Of course \u2013 as in every case, so too here \u2013 we always discuss this with the patient, so that they know roughly what to expect after treatment.<\/p>\n

Will I be able to sleep with the nighttime orthodontic appliance?<\/h2>\n

Sleeping with an orthodontic appliance can feel strange, especially for children, but fortunately, thanks to today’s modern appliances, this is no longer uncomfortable and you can get used to wearing it very quickly, so the nighttime appliance will not stand in the way of a restful night’s sleep.<\/p>\n

Will I be able to eat with the nighttime orthodontic appliance?<\/h2>\n

A major advantage of the nighttime orthodontic appliance is that it does not interfere at all with your usual daily routine. It is easy to remove and clean for sports, meals or social events, and at those times you can of course brush your teeth just as you are used to \u2013 while also cleaning the appliance, naturally.<\/p>\n
