Adult Orthodontics

There is no upper age limit for orthodontics

An everyday conversation in our clinic is when a parent watches their children's treatment and reflects on what a pity it is that this wasn't thought of in their time. "Surely as an adult, this can't be made up for now?" Of course it can! We can practically offer a solution for any orthodontic problem for adults too. Modern technology now makes it possible for you, as an adult, to comfortably and discreetly reach the confident smile you have always wanted. And this investment serves not only the aesthetics of your smile, but also the long-term health of your teeth and your quality of life.

Which conditions do we most often treat in adulthood?

Crowded teeth

In adulthood, the bite has settled into a more or less good — but in any case stable — state. Often it is not worth disturbing this; in such cases we just align the "showcase," the front teeth. This usually means a few months of orthodontic intervention with Invisalign or Smilezor invisible aligners.

Open bite

If speech-therapy treatment was missed in kindergarten and a slight tongue-thrust swallow has remained into adulthood, it is never too late to address this. Combined orthodontic and speech-therapy care can visibly improve open bite — and all its consequences — in a short time.

Jaw-joint complaints

Clicking and pain in the jaw joint is a common complaint regardless of age group. There can be many causes and the clicking can come from several places, but it can be said that often the underlying issue is the positional irregularities of the teeth. At our clinic we help uncover the cause of the complaint and treat the problem with orthodontics — but if something else is in the background, we refer our patients to the appropriate specialist.
Preparation for tooth replacements is done with orthodontics

Creating space before tooth replacement (pre-prosthetic treatment)

Orthodontics can be crucial before a successful tooth replacement or implantation. If you lost a tooth long ago, the neighbouring teeth often tilt into the gap, making the ideal tooth replacement impossible. With orthodontics we can restore the tilted molars to their original vertical position, creating an ideal space for the future implant or bridge. By aligning the teeth in the proper loading direction, we also optimise the bone supply around the implant, laying the foundation for the long-term success and durability of the replacement.

Facial asymmetries, severe bite irregularities

A special area of orthodontics is orthognathic surgical preparation. These jaw-related interventions can only be performed in adulthood, and spectacular, lasting changes can be achieved both in the dentition and in the facial character. At Foxxi we work at a high level on surgical orthodontics — read more about it here: Surgical orthodontics
The retention phase after orthodontic treatment serves to stabilise the achieved result

Correction of relapse (re-treatment)

Many people experience that, after previous orthodontic treatment, teeth shift over the years — most often as a consequence of skipping the retention (holding) phase. The good news is that this can almost always be helped. With modern, discreet adult tools such as Invisalign, such a corrective treatment can be quick and comfortable. The use of retention devices (removable and/or fixed) is, however, essential to maintain the result long-term.

Invisible solution: aligners (clear trays)

Invisalign treatment: The most popular adult choice — as an official Invisalign Platinum Provider we have one of the highest levels of domestic experience. This certification and the hundreds of successful cases are your guarantee that we will plan your treatment with the greatest confidence and precision. The system is a series of completely transparent 3D-printed aligners, which need to be replaced every 7–10 days. You can simply take the aligners out for meals and brushing, so there are no dietary restrictions and oral hygiene remains perfect. Comfortable, discreet, and thanks to the digital planning, extremely predictable.

Discreet and effective fixed systems

  • Self-ligating aesthetic appliances: These modern fixed braces work with clear ceramic brackets that almost perfectly match the colour of the teeth. Self-ligating technology means there are no annoying elastic ligatures — a special clip holds the archwire in place, resulting in gentler force, more comfortable wear and often more efficient treatment.
  • Self-ligating metal appliances: Modern metal braces are no longer what they used to be. Today's self-ligating metal brackets are much smaller, flatter and more comfortable. This system is the most durable and most cost-effective fixed solution, offering uncompromising efficiency.

Frequently asked questions about adult orthodontics

Am I too old for orthodontics?

Absolutely not. If the bone and gums supporting your teeth are free of inflammation, there is no upper age limit for orthodontics. Adult treatment is now completely commonplace; among our patients you can find every age group from their twenties to their sixties — all of them seeking a healthier, more confident smile.

Is this just aesthetics, or are there health benefits too?

Although a confident smile is the most visible result, adult orthodontics is at least as much about your health. Properly setting the bite reduces pathological wear and overload of the teeth, can prevent or improve jaw-joint problems, and a regular set of teeth is much easier to keep clean — preventing gum inflammation and other periodontal diseases.

How long does adult orthodontic treatment take?

The length of treatment always depends on the complexity of the case. A simpler, aesthetic correction can take only 6–8 months, while a more complex bite correction can take 1.5–2.5 years. We can determine the exact, personalised duration after the first consultation and digital planning.

Is treatment more painful as an adult?

No, the biological process is the same. The mild pressure felt when a new aligner is placed or a bonded appliance is activated is a natural part of treatment, but thanks to the modern, gentle-force systems we use, this is minimal and quickly passing.

Which appliance is best for me: Invisalign or fixed braces?

There is no single "best" appliance — only the one that best suits your case and lifestyle. Invisalign offers maximum discretion and flexibility, while modern self-ligating fixed appliances can be more efficient for certain tooth movements. At the consultation we will jointly choose the ideal solution for you.

I have crowns, implants and fillings. Is that a problem?

Not at all, but it requires special expertise and careful planning. Teeth with fillings or crowns can be moved just like natural teeth. Implants are osseointegrated, fixed points — these we cannot move, but they provide ideal anchorage for tooth movements. And often we are creating ideal space precisely for an implant.

What guarantees that my teeth stay straight after orthodontic treatment?

The retention (holding) phase after active treatment is at least as important as the orthodontics itself. We secure the beautiful achieved result with a thin wire bonded to the inner surface of the teeth and/or a removable night-time aligner. This is the "insurance" on your investment, guaranteeing the long-term stability of your smile.

How difficult is it to keep the orthodontic appliance clean?

With removable Invisalign aligners, brushing can be done as usual. With fixed braces, we will show you the special — but easy-to-use — tools (interdental brush, single-tuft brush) needed to keep the brackets and teeth perfectly clean.

How much does orthodontic treatment cost, and is there an installment option?

The price of orthodontic treatment is always personalised. It is important to know that at Foxxi the detailed quote includes everything, with no hidden costs. To make financing easier, we provide flexible, interest-free installment payment options for the entire duration of treatment.

How often do I need to come for orthodontic check-ups?

We respect your time, so we plan treatments to be as efficient as possible. Depending on the appliance type, with Invisalign generally every 8–12 weeks, with fixed braces approximately every 6 weeks a check-up is needed, where we monitor progress and make the necessary adjustments.
