The retention phase after orthodontic treatment serves to stabilise the achieved result

Retention Plate and Fixed Retainer – How to Preserve the Results of Your Orthodontic Treatment

Why is retention important after orthodontic treatment?

After the orthodontic appliance is removed, the goal is for the result to last over the long term. Teeth have a natural tendency to drift back toward their original position.

The two main retention methods: removable retainer and fixed retainer.

We use two procedures to prevent relapse:

On one hand, everyone receives a removable vacuum-formed retainer at the end of treatment, called a retention plate. It is a thin, transparent plastic foil that fits perfectly over the teeth. It is very comfortable and prevents any movement. We recommend wearing these every night for the first 6 months, then less and less frequently, and after 1 year only 1-2 times a week, really just for added safety.

The other, parallel solution is the bonded, or fixed, retainer. This is a thin wire bonded to the inner surface of the front teeth. You can feel that it is there, but it is not bothersome at all and is completely invisible. These only prevent the movement of the front teeth, the “shop window,” and they last about 5-10 years. My recommendation, however, is that it is worth wearing them for a lifetime, because as long as they are in place, the beautifully aligned teeth cannot shift. They can always be used on the lower arch, but on the upper arch, depending on the shape of the teeth and the final bite, this is not always possible! It is not our goal to completely prevent the movement of the back teeth for a lifetime, because they tend to move a little during chewing, and it is not necessary either. With a properly adjusted bite, these teeth support one another, and it is very rare for them to shift.

When do you need to come in for a check-up?

In the year following the completion of treatment, you need to attend two check-up examinations, and after that, an annual check-up is recommended for as long as the fixed retainers are in place.
