And that brings us straight to the first question: what exactly are we talking about when we talk about orthodontic elastics?
There are two types of orthodontic elastics: one is the elastic band, and the other is the elastic ligature.
The first is the kind that you can take off and put on yourself – in fact, you need to, since these elastics play a role in moving the teeth back and forth and connect the individual parts of the braces, but they should of course be removed for meals and toothbrushing. This type of elastic may be a little uncomfortable, especially in the early period, but it is very important to wear it all day if possible, so that the teeth move into the correct position as soon as possible!

What does leave a little room for some fashion fun, however, is the placement of the elastic ligatures.
These tiny little elastics are placed on the brackets (by us, not by you) and mainly serve to hold the orthodontic structure together and to secure the archwire to the brackets. The elastic ligatures can be replaced during the course of orthodontic treatment whenever the appliance is adjusted. Three different ligation strengths are possible, which means three different tension levels can be set for each individual bracket.
The elastic rings used during orthodontic therapy – often also called “ligatures” or “o-rings” – play a vital role in carrying out the treatment effectively. The primary purpose of the elastic rings is to secure the orthodontic archwires around the brackets (orthodontic clips) placed on the teeth, thereby ensuring a stable and consistent connection between the wire and the teeth throughout the entire therapy. In addition, the connection created in this way allows the orthodontic archwires to move the teeth in the predetermined direction and with the predetermined force, thus helping the teeth to be repositioned precisely into the required positions.
No trick, no illusion: orthodontic elastics come in a wide range of colours, both the intermaxillary elastics and the ligatures. Whether it is your favourite outfit or perhaps your favourite sports team, there is nothing to stop your braces from reflecting your personality.
Of course, it is no problem either if you would rather skip the colourful range of elastics, including the neon colours, pastel shades and even the fluorescent or glitter options. If you prefer to go for discretion instead, there is nothing to worry about: the colour palette also includes a clear and a white version.
But do not forget: orthodontic elastics are not only an aesthetic choice. In every case, it is the orthodontic specialist who must decide on their use and type, so that you achieve the perfect smile as soon as possible.
Since the small elastics can be removed in the case of intermaxillary elastic traction, there is no need to worry about them discolouring. Preventing the discolouration of orthodontic elastics in the case of elastic ligatures is not that difficult either – you just need to pay attention to a few small things:

When an orthodontic elastic falls off or is lost from the braces, it is important to act immediately so that the treatment does not lose its effectiveness. In the case of an elastic band, since the elastic has to be removed several times a day anyway, you simply need to replace it.
