Periodontal Diseases (Periodontology)

Healthy gums, stable teeth

Prevention and comprehensive treatment of periodontal disease.

Did you know that the most common cause of tooth loss in adulthood is not tooth decay, but periodontal disease (periodontitis)? At the Foxxi Dental Clinic, we pay special attention to the health of your gums and supporting bone. Bleeding gums, bad breath or loose teeth are not "natural" — they are symptoms of chronic inflammation. Our specialists' goal is to halt the process and stabilize your teeth, so you can keep your own teeth for the rest of your life.

Conservative Periodontology (Non-surgical)

The foundation of every treatment is achieving an inflammation-free state.

  • Professional cleaning: Removal of tartar and plaque.
  • Closed curettage: Cleaning the pockets beneath the gum line under local anesthesia, without any incision.
  • Splinting: Bonding loose teeth together with an invisible "band" for stability.

Regenerative Surgery

When bone loss is advanced, cleaning alone is not enough. In these cases, our goal is to rebuild the structure that supports the tooth.

  • Open curettage: Through a small incision, the gum is gently lifted so the dentist can directly see and clean the root surface and the bone.
  • Bone grafting and regeneration: We place special bone graft materials or regeneration-promoting proteins (e.g. Emdogain) where the bone is missing, which stimulates the body's own healing and helps stabilize the tooth. In cases of more severe bone loss, an oral surgery procedure may also be necessary.

Gum Contouring and Aesthetic Corrections (For a Beautiful Smile)

Often the teeth themselves are healthy, but the gum line is uneven, disturbing the overall appearance.

  • Covering gum recession: If the gums have receded and the tooth neck looks "long" (or is sensitive), we cover the exposed root with your own gum tissue (grafted from the palate) or with a special technique. This is not only beautiful — it also protects the tooth.
  • Gummy smile correction (crown lengthening): If too much gum shows when you smile and your teeth look "small", we reshape the gum line microsurgically so your teeth appear better proportioned.

Frequently Asked Questions — Periodontology

Can periodontal disease be cured?

The disease is chronic, so it cannot be "cured" (lost bone rarely grows back), but the process can be halted and made symptom-free. The goal is to keep your teeth.

Why do my gums bleed when I brush my teeth?

Bleeding gums are the first sign of inflammation. They don't bleed because you "brushed too hard", but because bacteria are irritating them. Don't stop cleaning — quite the opposite! Book an appointment for a professional dental cleaning!

Does periodontal curettage hurt?

Deep cleaning is always performed under local anesthesia, so you won't feel any pain during the treatment. Some sensitivity may occur for 1-2 days afterwards.

Is periodontal disease hereditary?

The predisposition can be inherited, but the disease only develops in the presence of plaque (bacteria). With good oral hygiene, the problem can be prevented even despite a genetic predisposition.

Does smoking make things worse?

Yes, drastically. Healing is much poorer in smokers, and the disease destroys the bone faster. We strongly recommend quitting.

What does splinting loose teeth mean?

If your teeth have become loose due to bone loss, we bond them together with a thin, invisible band on the tongue side. This stabilizes them, so you can chew with them again.

Is periodontal disease contagious?

The bacteria that cause the disease can be transmitted through saliva (e.g. shared cutlery, kissing), but the disease only develops in the other person if they are predisposed to it and neglect their oral hygiene.

Will receded gums grow back?

Not on their own. In certain cases, gum recession can be corrected with gum grafting surgery, but the most important thing is to stop any further recession.

What toothpaste should I use for gum inflammation?

There are special toothpastes and mouthwashes (e.g. containing chlorhexidine), but these should only be used as a short-term course. The most important thing is mechanical cleaning (toothbrush, interdental cleaners).

Does dental floss damage my gums?

Not if you use it correctly. If your gums bleed from flossing, that is a sign of inflammation between the teeth. Keep using it with confidence — as the inflammation subsides, the bleeding will stop too.
